Calypsonians vying for the Calypso Monarch title perform throughout the festival period in calypso ‘tents’.
On pre-announced nights, the competition’s judges visit each tent and score the performers on known criteria.
After the last tent judging, 18 contestants are selected to go forward to the Pic-o-de-Crop semi-finals.
At the semis, each contestant sings two calypsos in an order determined by a random draw. (It’s a l.o.n.g evening!) The nine calypsonians judged best go forward to the finals.
