Event Description

The Open House programme is presented by the Barbados National Trust.

Codrington College in St. John is this week’s Open House.

The first institution of higher learning in the West Indies, Codrington College was completed in 1748. It now provides dignified and serene surroundings for theological studies. Today’s visit includes the dramatic main building patterned after an Oxford college, and rare access to the Principal’s Lodge (formerly the Consett Plantation Great House) built in medieval design. Approached through majestic palms and surrounded by stunning park land, the total effect is heavenly.

In addition to the main tour, there will several other activities:

– An Art Exhibition featuring artists such as: Corrie Scott, Julianna Inniss, Oneka Small, Martina Pile and Gail Riley, to mention a few. These artists’ artwork will be sale.

– Tea accompanied with very tasty eats.

– Lots of fun activities for the children, including: Story Corner with Janice Cumberbatch, Painting Classes with Linda Bowen and Face Painting with Peggy Scott.

– Local artisans will be on hand selling attractive and well made Barbadians crafts.

The Trust’s food and beverage stall will be on site too selling their all wonderful eats and beverages.

The Lively Lectures will be presented by:
Dr. Tara Inniss of the History Department of the University of the West Indies at 3:15 pm
Mr. Kevin Farmer, Deputy Director of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society at 3:45 pm

Hold onto your tickets as there will be door prizes at drawn for at 4:15 pm.

Directions:  From the ABC Highway, turn east at the Norman Niles roundabout onto Highway 4 and stay on it. You’ll pass Bulkeley Sugar Factory and Ellerton. Shortly after Kendall, take the right fork to stay on Highway 4, going through Massiah Street. The road descends, and meet an almost-T junction. Go left, passing Palmers, and look for the college two minutes beyond on the right.

Barbados National Trust Open Houses

The Open Houses Programme is a Winter Season Tradition in Barbados presented by the Barbados National Trust (BNT).  It allows visitors and residents alike access to some of the island’s loveliest houses.  Discover more about our island’s diverse architecture and history.

The programme includes all types of houses – from the grand old plantation houses rich with centuries of history, to the newer, luxurious Bajan-style villas.

Grounds and gardens are part of the attraction.  Sip your rum punch in stunning tropical settings.

The BNT sets up a bazaar with books and crafts people.  Refreshments are on sale.
In addition, they provide historical and architectural information which you can take home with you at no additional cost.

At 3:15 pm, short lectures are given by the BNT’s experts on heritage.  These are:

a past president of Barbados National Trust and the author of ‘Historic Houses of Barbados’ and ‘Treasures of Barbados.’

Mr. Peter StevensBNT’s current president.

The Barbados National Trust was founded in 1961 to preserve our unique heritage – be it historic buildings, place of natural beauty or out flora and fauna.

It’s a very active Trust and was recently successful in achieving UNESCO International Heritage Site status for Bridgetown and its Garrison.
