Event Description

The Open House programme is presented by the Barbados National Trust.

Clifton Hall is this week’s Open House. 
Clifton Hall is one of Barbados’ oldest and grandest great houses. Set in ample gardens, Clifton Hall joins a medieval structure to a later, Georgian mansion.  Its gracious Palladian double entrance staircase, arcaded gallery, and spacious reception rooms belie the Jane Eyre element concealed upstairs. Its treasure was recently rescued from ruination by owners who have stylishly transformed the house for modern living and yet retained its historical character.

No stilettos please!

Come out and be informed by lively lectures by Sir Henry Fraser, who will speak about Clifton’s interesting history.

Mr. Massimo Franchi, Clifton’s owner, will tell you all about the restoration of Clifton Hall Great House.

By entertained by the musical talent of Mr. Ryan Boyce on keyboard playing local, Caribbean and international musical renditions.

The Open House Bazaar will provide refreshments as well as select Caribbean books, art works and craft items from top local producers.

The gates at Clifton Hall will open at 1:45 pm

Tours of the house and grounds will start at 2:00 pm, with the last tour starting at 4:30 pm.

The House closes to visitors at 5:00 pm sharp

Directions:
From the ABC Highway at the Clyde Walcott Roundabout turn east towards Hothersal Turning. Shortly ahead, turn right at Kelsi’s and head up Highway  3.  Pass Orchid World on your left.  After about 2km, go straight through Four Cross Roads. After another 2km or so, turn left at the sign post for Clifton Hall. At the T Junction, go left. Clifton Hall is shortly ahead. Follow the BNT parking signs.

Children under 5 Free
BARP, AARP and CARP Members Bds $30.00
Members of the Barbados National Trust Bds $25.00 upon presentation of membership card. Also applicable to reciprocating Trusts and Societies members.
Children 12-17 y.o. and Students (BCC, UWI and Polytechnic with ID): Bds $15.00

Dress nicely casual.

No pre-booking is needed. Just follow the directions – look for the signs.

The Open Houses Programme is a Winter Season Tradition in Barbados presented by the Barbados National Trust (BNT).  It allows visitors and residents alike access to some of the island’s loveliest houses.  Discover more about our island’s diverse architecture and history.

The programme includes all types of houses – from the grand old plantation houses rich with centuries of history, to the newer, luxurious Bajan-style villas.

Grounds and gardens are part of the attraction.  Sip your rum punch in stunning tropical settings.

The BNT sets up a bazaar with books and crafts people.  Refreshments are on sale.
In addition, they provide historical and architectural information which you can take home with you at no additional cost.

At 3:15 pm, short lectures are given by the BNT’s experts on heritage.  These are:

a past president of Barbados National Trust and the author of ‘Historic Houses of Barbados’ and ‘Treasures of Barbados.’

Mr. Peter StevensBNT’s current president.

The Barbados National Trust was founded in 1961 to preserve our unique heritage – be it historic buildings, place of natural beauty or out flora and fauna.

It’s a very active Trust and was recently successful in achieving UNESCO International Heritage Site status for Bridgetown and its Garrison.
