Hike Barbados
takes you through cane fields, gullies, tropical forests, and coastal communities to explore the unique geological and social structure of Barbados.

Along the way, you will meet new friends, enjoy healthy exercise and observe the delicate balance of the unique heritage and environment of Barbados.

To get to the starting point of the hike:
Just over a mile west of Six Cross Roads on Highway 5.

Hike time: 6:00 PM ONLY!

Barbados National Trust Hikes

The hikes are FREE but donations are welcome towards the work of the Barbados National Trust (preserving our built and natural environment).

Times
All morning hikes start at 6:00 a.m.
Afternoon hikes (Stop ‘n’ Stare only) start at 3:30 p.m.
The Moonlight Walks start at 5:30 p.m., you are advised to bring a torch to these walks.

There is a morning hike and, in addition, either an afternoon hike or a moonlight walk on every hike date EXCEPT the date of the Great Train Hike.

Place
All hikes start and finish at the meeting place.
There is a printed booklet with a calendar of the year’s hikes available from the National Trust at Wildey House, Wildey, St. Michael

Dress
Loose clothing, comfortable hiking boots/sports shoes, sunscreen, hat. Bring your camera and a bottle of water. Refreshments are on sale after the Hikes.

Walk Descriptions
In the morning, there are four hikes at different paces.
All hikes last approximately 3 hours., but…..
The Stop ‘n’ Stare group walks for 5-6 miles,
The Medium group 8-10 miles,
The Fast Medium group 10 to 12 miles, and
The Fast group 12-14 miles.

Advice for first-time walkers
The sun is hot!  You will get tired more quickly than you think.
The best thing to do is to go on the Stop ‘n Stare on your first hike.
If you’re comfortable with that, work your way up.

After Exchange, bear right (dangerous junction) just before Proutes and look for old factory chimney. Park in the plantation yard.

The Barbados National Trust is a charitable, non-profit organization founded in 1961. Their mission is to preserve and protect the physical aspects of Barbados’ culture. Among the architectural and archaeological sites maintained are many places of interest which remain favorites of Barbadian locals and visitors alike. These sites prove in some way to be ecologically essential, culturally significant or are simply the “fields and hills” mentioned in Barbados’ national anthem which beautify the natural environment.

This year Barbados celebrates it 53rd Anniversary of Independence and Procession To The City.

The annual parade of some 1000 armed and unarmed groups will convene at the Kensington Oval.

The parade is a colourful spectacle of marching groups with the Barbados Girl Guides Association and the Barbados Defense Force Band.

Governor General, Dame Sandra Mason and Chief Justice, Sir Marston Gibson will be among the dignitaries in attendance.

Prime Minister The Hon. Mia Amor Mottley will deliver a Message to the Nation.

Thousands usually attend.

Immediately after the ceremony, there will be a march entitled We Barbados from Kensington Oval through Bridgetown to National Heroes Square, where Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley will take the salute.

The parade will include 1022 persons from community groups, sporting and cultural icons, some 5000 students, life-sized portraits of our national heroes, vendors serving traditional Barbadian items, secondary school students taking part in cultural activities and a special guest performance by The General Edwin Yearwood.

Free Tickets will be required to enter the stands.

Tickets will be available from at the following locations:
The National Cultural Foundation, West Terrace, St James; General Post Office, Cheapside, Bridgetown; St Philip Post Office, Six Roads; St Peter Post Office, Speightstown; Worthing Post Office, Christ Church; Warrens Post Office, St Michael.

Tickets may be collected weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

There will be a park and ride service available for them from the following locations:
Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre
Queen’s College
Garrison Savannah

Buses will depart these sites for Kensington Oval between 5:45 a.m. and 7:15 a.m.

After the parade, buses will depart Kensington Oval from President Kennedy Drive, beginning at 10:15 a.m., to return to the park and ride locations.

Start your tour at the magnificent Foursquare Rum Distillery. You will learn about the various stages of rum-making and enjoy sampling their amazing rums at the bar. From here we will visit Clifton Hall Plantation, one of Barbados’ oldest and grandest great houses where you can taste the Clifton Hall 12 Year Old Rum masterfully distilled and blended at Foursquare Distillery.

Then you will be introduced to a quintessential “Bajan rum shop”. There are rum shops all over Barbados, about 1,200 scattered across the island. They include village shops that provide everything – groceries, bread, provisions – and are a local meeting place with rum and dominoes to while the hours away with good friends and talk.
