Sail For Sight - Solo Sail Around Barbados Attempt by Bill Tempro

On Sun Oct 13th, Bill Tempro, an experienced 75-year-old sailor who suffered vision loss, will attempt to sail solo around Barbados.

Bill Tempro had brought glory to Barbados in 1967 with a World GP 14 Championship win in Ontario, Canada, has sailed around Barbados previously with assistance. However, this will be the first time that the sailor, who lost his eyesight while sailing some years ago, will attempt to circumnavigate Barbados alone.

Casting off from Carlisle Bay at first light, Bill will have to avoid the dangers of Bow Bells and Cobblers Reef of Sam Lord’s fame.

The attempt is to raise funds for the purchase of equipment for the eye operating theatres at The Caribbean Lions Eye Care Centre of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Many Barbadians experience sight loss due to glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy. These conditions often require surgery to save a person's sight. Over 1500 surgeries are conducted at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital annually, but this is still not enough to meet the needs of our aging population.  The Caribbean Lions Eye Care Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the island’s only public secondary and tertiary eye care unit, and contains additional operating theatre space for eye surgeries, if this space could be equipped adequately.

See attached flyer or visit to see how you can donate to this cause.

Start time: 6:00 AM   End time: 5:00 PM
