Open House: George Washington House and the Garrison Tunnels

The Open House programme is presented by the Barbados National Trust.

George Washington House is this week's Open House.

George Washington House is located in the beautiful Garrison Historic Area. Unique in the Caribbean for the preservation and integrity of its buildings and landscape, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The transformation of George Washington House into a museum and historical site is one of the most ambitious tourism projects ever undertaken in Barbados. The result is a heritage site of great significance, which contains many surprises.

Barbados was an unlikely destination for George Washington, then a 19-year-old with aspirations but no means. Fatefully, he accompanied his ill, older half-brother here on his “health tourism” trip in 1751. (His doctor recommended Barbados) It was Washington’s only journey outside the colonial US, and what a difference it made!

There will also be tours of the Garrison Tunnels. A network of narrow stone and brick tunnels, some as much as ten feet high, runs beneath the Garrison. Built around 1820 for drainage, the tunnels keep the Garrison from being the swampy mess where mosquito-borne diseases decimated the British troops who were stationed there. The tunnels likely did double duty as secret supply and escape routes for the military.

Books, art and craft will be sold on the lawn. Light refreshments will be available both at the Trust’s stall and at the museum’s excellent cafe.
