Open House: Las Palmas

The Open House programme is presented by the Barbados National Trust.

This week's Open House is Las Palmas.

Las Palmas is interesting for its architecture, its park-like setting, and its contents. Designed by the renowned Dudley Phelps in Tuscan style with Caribbean elements, Las Palmas was completed in 1935 and enlarged in the ‘80s. This splendid and spacious setting is now the residence of the Brazilian Ambassador. Las Palmas is also the setting for the ambassador and his wife’s collection of art and objects acquired during a career of globe-trotting. The broad, shady lawns are a relaxing place to enjoy an array of refreshments, Caribbean books, art and fine crafts.

Giving the Lively Lecture at 3:15 pm will be doctoral candidate, Frederick Alleyne who will share some results of his fascinating research into Barbadian migration to Brazil in the early 20th century, mostly to build railways. A century later, some descendants and their chattel houses are still there.

In addition to house tours, Brazilian percussion and demonstrations of capoeira will take place, giving patrons a chance to witness the skill and grace of this unique martial art that masquerades as dance.

The programme includes all types of houses - from the grand old plantation houses rich with centuries of history, to the newer, luxurious Bajan-style villas.

Grounds and gardens are part of the attraction.  Sip your rum punch in stunning tropical settings.

The BNT sets up a bazaar with books and crafts people.  Refreshments are on sale.
In addition, they provide historical and architectural information which you can take home with you at no additional cost.

At 3:15 pm, short lectures are given by the BNT's experts on heritage.  These are:

Prof Henry Fraser -
a past president of Barbados National Trust and the author of 'Historic Houses of Barbados' and 'Treasures of Barbados.'

Dr Karl Watson - BNT's current president and the editor of the journal of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. He is also the author of the forthcoming book 'History of the Sephardic Jews of Barbados.'

The Barbados National Trust was founded in 1961 to preserve our unique heritage - be it historic buildings, place of natural beauty or out flora and fauna.
