EBCCI Gallery Exhibition: Just Call Me Sarah by Cher-Antoinette - Opening Reception

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies in collaboration with the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination (EBCCI) presents the Opening Reception of the exhibition entitled Just Call Me Sarah - The Colours Of A Woman

This exhibition features the work of artist Cher-Antoinette

This exhibition is in commemoration of International Women's Day.

The exhibition will be opened by the Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Eudine Barriteau, the region’s leading advocate in Gender Studies.

Over 25 pieces will be on display, inclusive of a special installation that was inspired by the tragic story of the talented South African Khoi Khoi woman Saartjie Baartman (Sarah). Sarah was made to believe she was in store for a better life in Europe, if she were to showcase her 'attributes' - her ability to sing and dance.  However, their interest was more so for her physical attributes, never seen before by white Europeans. Sarah was whisked from her homeland and sold for exhibition in London. Ridiculed and objectified for the benefit of the theory of African relativity to the ape family, she died in Paris where she was further objectified as an exhibit.

The artwork of Cher-Antoinette is diverse and quite different to that on the local scene in Barbados. An emerging artist who started in earnest in 2014, the works are primarily affected by those aspects of her life that have influenced her. It can be considered almost a visual diary. Her medium of choice is Watercolour and Pen & Ink, and she has been experimenting with BRUSHO.
Being a scientist, she has quite an interest in illustration and is pursuing this and presently working on a number of projects to be published within the next two years.
Cher-Antoinette is also a nationally awarded writer and poet.
