Thoroughbred Horse Racing in Barbados has taken place at the Garrison Savannah for over 150 years. The Barbados Turf Club organizes three seasons of racing per year. These meetings run from January to April; May to August and from October to December, normally every other Saturday. There are usually nine races per day, starting around 1:00 pm and finishing around 5:45 pm.
Entrance fee to the various stands ranges from Bds $10.00 to $100.00 for the day. Special (higher) prices apply to Gold Cup Day in early March. Admission is free to the grounds.
Today's featured Race is the Sandy Lane Gold Cup.
The Gold Cup - in its 37th year, 21 of which have been sponsored by Sandy Lane - is the most prestigious horse race in the Caribbean and is the keynote race of the Barbados Turf Club.
Run annually in early March, horses come from the Caribbean and North America to take part. The race is surrounded by much pomp and ceremony, and is watched by thousands in a carnival atmosphere.
